So what is snowshoeing?

In deep snow, moving anything more than a few steps can be exhausting to the point of failure. This is where snowshoes come in. The origins of snowshoes aren’t known exactly although it’s believed that they have existed for between 4,000 and 6,000 years.

Snowshoes have taken many forms over the years with different shapes competing against one another over time. Many of the more traditional styles resembled old wooden tennis raquettes resulting in the French name today "raquette de neige" (snow raquettes).

Whatever the style, the idea behind all snowshoes is to spread your weight to keep you nearer to the surface of the snow.

Snowshoes have evolved somewhat over the years

Modern snowshoes are considerably lighter in weight than the old wooden framed contraptions and also offer a number of features to improve comfort and usability (one such feature is a heal rest to keep feet more horizontal when walking for sustained periods up hill).

The joys of snowshoeing

With snowshoes and some local knowledge (something our guide has in abundance!), you will be able to escape the more popular pistes and take an adventure well off the beaten path. This beautiful mountain environment is stunning all year around, but there is something magical about breaking trail into the wilderness when it is covered in a serene white blanket.
